Leprecon aris® lighting control illuminates National Czech & Slovak Museum

When the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library (NCSML) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa needed lighting for their new exhibit they called upon the services of designer, Scott Wiley of Sound Concepts to help them out. The project originally started in 2009 after the epic 2008 flood devastated the NCSML campus, creating over $11 million in damage.
Their goal was not only to re-build, but to create an exhibit depicting how the 2008 floods affected both the NCSML and the historic Czech neighborhoods.

The NCSML wanted the exhibit to include an interactive lighting display using a topographical model with pictures of downtown Cedar Rapids, showing both the flood lines of 2008 and 1993 (the previous highest flood level recorded, matching an older record flood from 1929). Museum visitors would be able to press a button next to explanatory paragraph and illuminate the corresponding picture for a visual representation and then self-cancel after a few moments.

Sound Concepts was brought in to the fold in early 2010 to help out with the NCSML project. Scott Wiley was given the task of not only lighting the exhibit but lso designing a system where finished construction precluded running conduits for larger wire bundles. Wiley’s design relied heavily on the aris® Architectural Interface system and customized wall stations from Leprecon. A custom version of the AI-512 software was created expressly for this project. This allowed the AI processor cards being used to detect the button pushes, and a LD-360 DMX adapter card being used to drive dimmable LED’s in the topographic model. MR16 Micro Ellipse and 3.5” ellipsoidal fixtures were supplied by Altman Stage Lighting.

Wiley was able to bring together off-the-shelf technology from the architectural and advertising signage worlds to create a reliable, custom solution that requires no attention from Museum staff during daily operations.
